You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Hydraulic Tank Oil
Change Hydo Oil
The hydraulic oil tank is located on the right rear of the machine. 1. Remove the hydraulic oil tank filler cap slowly to relieve the pressure. Inspect the filler cap gasket. Replace the gasket if damaged. 2. Remove the drain plug located under the right fender. Wash the plug in a clean, nonflammable solvent.3. Install a 25 mm (1 in) NPT pipe nipple, 100 mm (4 in) long, in the bottom of the tank drain to open the internal drain valve. Drain the oil.Attach a hose to the pipe nipple to keep the oil from draining on the machine.4. Remove the pipe nipple to close the drain valve. Install the drain plug to 68 7 N m (50 5 lb ft).5. Change the hydraulic system filter. See "Hydraulic System" in the "Every 500 Service Hours or 3 Months" section.6. Remove the retaining ring from the fill screen. Wash the screen in a clean, nonflammable solvent. Install the screen and retaining ring.7. Fill the hydraulic oil tank. See "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities." 8. Install the oil filler cap.9. Start and run the engine for a few minutes.10. Stop the engine. 11. Maintain the oil level between the ADD and FULL marks in the sight gauge. Add oil if necessary.Final Drives
Change the Oil
1. Position one final drive with the oil drain plug at the bottom.2. Remove the drain plug (1). Allow the oil to drain.3. Inspect the drain plug seal. Replace the seal if damaged.4. Clean and install the drain plug.5. Remove the oil fill plug (2).6. Fill the final drive to bottom of fill plug opening. See "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities."7. Inspect the condition of oil fill plug seal. Replace the seal if damaged.8. Clean the fill plug and magnet assembly in clean, nonflammable solvent and install.9. Repeat steps on the other side of machine.Engine Valve Lash
Adjust
To prevent possible injury, do not use the starter motor to turn the flywheel.Hot engine components can cause burns. Allow additional time for the engine to cool before measuring valve clearance.
Measure the valve lash with the engine stopped. To obtain an accurate measurement, allow at least 20 minutes for the valves to cool to engine cylinder head and block temperature.
Adjust the valve clearance to within 0.08 mm (.003 in) of the valve clearance setting given in the chart. Refer to the Service Manual or your Caterpillar dealer for the complete valve adjustment procedure.Engine Valve Rotators
Check
When inspecting the valve rotators, protective glasses or face shield and protective clothing must be worn, to prevent being burned by hot oil spray.
1. Start the engine and run at low idle. 2. Watch the top surface on each valve rotator. Each valve rotator should turn slightly each time the valve closes.3. Stop the engine. If a valve fails to rotate, contact your Caterpillar dealer.Track Roller Frame Guides
