Introduction
This instruction provides the necessary information for the modifications of the above models, to install an improved torque converter lockup control system. The new arrangement incorporates an enclosed transmission speed sensor probe and a new speed switch. The sensor probe sends a signal to the speed switch which is proportional to the speed of the torque converter output shaft. The enclosed sensor probe eliminates the sensor plates mounted on the torque converter output yoke. At times, problems were encountered due to them not running true and thereby giving an erratic output signal. The new speed switch is more reliable than the former 6U9025 Speed Switch. The new system can be installed on machines in service if required.Do not perform any procedure, outlined in this publication, or order any parts until you read and understand the information contained within.Reference: Service ManualNecessary Parts
Modifications
1. Remove the torque converter output yoke and seal retainer, with the sensor plates and the magnetic pick-up. Refer to the Service Manual.
Converter Output Yoke Modification. (A) Use existing retainer plate. (B) Use existing bolt.2. Referring to the Parts Needed chart and the illustration above, install the new components. This will allow mounting a new toothed rotor and a sensor probe.3. When assembling the new parts, measure the gap between the end of the shaft and plate (A) and install a thickness of shims 0.13 - 0.25 mm (0.005 - 0.010") LESS than the measured gap. Refer to the Service Manual. Tighten Bolt (B) to a torque of 195 - 245 N m (144 - 181 lb ft).4. Discard the 3N7477 Magnetic Sensor that was removed in Step 1.5. Remove and discard the 6U9025 Speed Switch which is normally located on the right wall of the cab.6. Remove and discard the 5U3686 Lockup Pressure Switch and 5U6023 Low Transmission Oil Warning Switch (if equipped). These components are located immediately behind the transmission pressure test point. See the Service Manual.7. Remove and discard the low transmission oil pressure indicator mounted on the dash and plug the hole with a 2U4730 Grommet (26).8. Remove and discard 5U7177 Lockup Pressure Switch located in the downshift inhibitor cylinder. The downshift inhibitor cylinder is mounted on the outside of the right cab wall.9. Install 9X3269 Switch (14) in the downshift inhibitor cylinder (replacing 5U7177). Use a 6V9601 Adaptor (12) and 3J1907 O-ring Seal (13).
Mounting for 8C9792 Switch (17). (C) Existing test point. (D) Existing hose.10. Install 8C9792 Pressure Switch (17) where the 5U3686 Lockup Pressure Sensor and 5U6023 Low Transmission Oil Warning Switch (if equipped) were removed. Refer to the Parts Needed Chart and the above illustration.
7U6154 Harness and Connections.
(E) Connect to 9X3470 Speed Switch. (F) Connect to 9X3470 Speed Switch. (G) Connections to lockup Indicator. (H) Connection to No.2 C/B. (J) Connection to No.6 C/B. (K) Connections to existing 6U0376 Jake® Brake Relay (in dash). Tape these two wires if the machine is not equipped with a Jacobs® Brake. (L) Connect to 9X3269 Pressure Switch. (M) Connect to 8C9792 Pressure Switch. (N) Connect to existing 6U0227
