Schematic of the Power Train ECM
This diagnostic code is associated with the harness code from the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM. The information is sent via the CAT Data Link. The CAT Data Link is connected to two inputs of the Power Train ECM.This FMI 09 means that the Power Train ECM has determined that a valid harness code is not received from the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 0650 FMI 09 is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1. CHECK FOR AN OPEN
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect harness connector J1 from the Power Train ECM.
Disconnect the harness connector from the rear of Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM.
At the Power Train ECM, measure the resistance between connector J1-20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) and connector contact 14 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) for the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM.
At the Power Train ECM, measure the resistance between connector J1-10 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and connector contact 5 (wire 893-GN(Green)) for the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM. Expected Result:The resistance is less than 5 ohms on each circuit. Results:
YES - The resistance is less than 5 ohms on each circuit. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NO - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms.Repair: The harness has failed. Repair the harness or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK FOR A SHORT IN THE HARNESS
The key start switch remains in the OFF position.
The two harness connectors remain disconnected.
Check the continuity between connector contact 10 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and connector contact 20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)). Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. Results:
YES - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. The circuitry for the harness is functioning correctly. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The circuitry for the harness has failed. The two wires are shorted in the harness.Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE HARNESS CODE
The key start switch remains in the OFF position.
The two harness connectors remain disconnected.
Measure the resistance at the Caterpillar Monitoring System harness connector from connector contact 6 (wire 201-BK(Black)) to frame ground. Note the resistance.
Measure the resistance at the Caterpillar Monitoring System harness connector. Measure between frame ground and connector contact 3, connector contact 12, connector contact 16, connector contact 22, and connector contact 31. Expected Result:The resistance is 5 ohms or less between frame ground and connector contact 6. The resistance is 5 ohms or greater between frame ground and connector contact 3, connector contact 12, connector contact 16, connector contact 22 and connector contact 31.Results:
YES - There is 5 ohms or less between frame ground and connector contact 6. The resistance is 5 ohms or greater between frame ground and connector contact 3, connector contact 12, connector contact 16, connector contact 22, and connector contact 31. The circuitry for the harness is functioning correctly. The Power Train ECM may
