Removal Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Disconnect the electrical terminals at the battery.Note: For naturally aspirated engines, remove the air intake housing. Perform Steps 4, 5, and 7.
Close the drain for the sea water circuit.

Loosen the hose clamps which fasten the air hose to inlet (1) of the aftercooler. Slide the hose onto the outlet line of the turbocharger.
Remove the tube for the dipstick.

Remove fuel line (4) and electrical connection (6) from air inlet heater (5) .Note: On naturally aspirated engines, the air inlet heater is located at the rear of the inlet and exhaust manifold.

Loosen the hose clamps that fasten the hoses to sea water outlet (3) and sea water inlet (2). Remove the hoses.

Remove the eighteen bolts that secure the air intake housing to the inlet and exhaust manifold. Remove the bolts in the reverse order that is shown inIllustration 5. Remove the aftercooler from the engine. For naturally aspirated engines, remove ten bolts that fasten the air intake housing to the inlet and exhaust manifold. Start at the ends of the air intake housing and work toward the center.Note: The weight of the aftercooler is 19 kg (42 lb). Use the proper equipment in order to remove the aftercooler core assembly.
