SWITCH AS-PRESSURE 3087698 - Caterpillar

(1) Release the pressure in the hydraulic track adjuster, and remove the track idler from the roller frame as shown in the Service Manual. Remove the guard from over the top of the recoil spring group. Inspect the recoil spring for cracked or broken parts. If the recoil spring is broken, use the procedure that follows to remove the spring. If the recoil spring is not broken, use the procedure on page 5 to remove the spring. (2) If the recoil spring is broken, use the guards from over the recoil spring as a template to make plate (1) from 12.0 mm (.5") thick mild steel. Make slot (A) to the dimensions shown. Slot (A) should be just wide enough to give access to the cutting torch tip so the coils of the large spring can be cut. Remove sections (B), as needed, so plate (1) will fit around plates (2). Fasten plate (1) to the roller frame with six S1585 Bolts and 5P8245 Washers. (3) Cut coils (3) of the large spring (about seven coils) with a cutting torch so all of the spring force is released. It will be necessary to cut about 1/3 to 2/3of the way through each coil before the remaining part of the coil breaks with a sudden release of a large amount of force. When all spring force is released, make slot (A) in plate (1) wider and again cut coils (3) to remove a 25.0 mm (1.0") section from the end of each coil. Cut inner spring coils (4) until all the spring force is released. Use caution as shown on page 2. Remove plate (1) and use a hoist to remove the recoil spring from the roller frame.(4) To install a new recoil spring group, see page 9 for the procedure.Removal Of Complete Recoil Spring
(1) Make one plate (1) from 38.0 mm (1.5") thick mild steel to the dimensions shown. Make four 27.0 mmØ (1.06"Ø) holes (A) through the plate as shown. Make two 13.8 mmØ (.54"Ø) holes (B) through the plate as shown. Use a 17.5 mmØ (.69"Ø) drill bit to make counterbore (C) to the depth shown. Put 5/8"-11 threads in holes (B). Make four pieces of black pipe (2) to the dimensions shown.(2) In addition to the above parts, the items that follow will also be needed: four 6M2001 Bolts (3), four 4B4285 Washers and two 1D1090 Bolts (4). A 6V113 Cylinder Group and 5P3100 Hydraulic Pump Group will be used with the above tools to remove and install the spring group. A FT577 Spring Compressor, 9S8900 Cylinder Group and 5P3100 Hydraulic Pump Group will be used to assemble and disassemble the recoil spring outside the track roller frame. (3) Release the pressure in the hydraulic track adjuster, and remove the track idler from the roller frame as shown in the service Manual.
