Sensors provide information to the electronic control modules. The information enables the modules to control the engine as efficiently as possible over a wide range of operating conditions. The information is used for monitoring engine operation.The sensors provide signals to the ECM that are used in the determination of the states of engine alarms and of engine shutdowns. These conditions may be in response to abnormal operation or to a command that is initiated by the operator. Illustrations 4, 5, and 6 show the locations of the sensors. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Engine Sensors" for the descriptions of all of these sensors.

Components of the monitoring system for the engine exhaust temperature (30) Turbocharger outlet temperature sensor (31) Turbocharger inlet temperature sensor (32) Exhaust gas temperature sensors at the cylinder exhaust ports (33) Integrated Temperature Sensing Module (ITSM)Type K thermocouples are used as exhaust gas temperature sensors for the engine. These exhaust gas temperature sensors provide information for the Integrated Temperature Sensing Module (ITSM). The ITSM uses this information to monitor engine operation.The ITSM monitors all of the signals from the exhaust gas temperature sensors. If a problem is detected, the ITSM has the ability to enable alarms and shutoffs. The ITSM broadcasts the temperature readings of the exhaust gas temperature sensors over the Cat Data Link for use by other modules.
