Information:
To avoid possible personal injury, do not start or operate the engine with the fan guards removed.
To obtain acceptable results, open the front grill and direct the cleaning medium at right angles to the front of each core face. Move the nozzle from the middle to the upper end of each core, working back and forth from the rear of the vee to the front of the vee. After the entire face of each core in the upper half of the radiator has been cleaned, do the lower half. Because of the additional surface area, the average cleaning time should be slightly longer than for the conventional core radiator. The engine should not be running during this portion of the cleaning procedure.
Once cleaning has been accomplished, start the engine and accelerate to high idle several times or until loosened debris ceases to exhaust from the core. Stop the engine and repeat the cleaning process. The cleaning process may be shortened the second time. Start engine and again accelerate it to high idle several times. To increase the air velocity after blowing or washing the core, place a piece of plywood over the lower third of the radiator. Put the plywood in between the grill and the radiator toward the bottom of the core. Start and accelerate the engine several times or until trash ceases to be expelled. Stop the engine and move the plywood toward the top of the core. The plywood may have to be wired in place. Repeat the engine acceleration process. The increased air velocities will aid in the removal of debris from between the fins. If steam or water is used, continue running the engine until the core is hot and no water vapors come off the fins. This is important to prevent rust which will damage the fins. The machine is then ready for use.
If oil, sap or mud is encountered, a different cleaning procedure is required. Oil and sap can be cleaned from a core by using a commercial degreaser. The degreaser must be applied to both sides of the core face, especially in the area of visible plugging. Let it soak for a minimum of 5 minutes. Then wash the core. Use very hot water and a small amount of laundry detergent with high pressure washer. Concentrate the cleaning efforts on areas which were exposed to the oil or sap. Work from both sides of the core. Be sure to wash each end of the core assembly in the seal area because the excess oil can be detrimental to the seals. After washing, rinse the assemblies with hot water and start the engine. Accelerate the engine several times and rinse the cores again. Repeat this rinse process until detergent bubbles no longer come from the fins. Continue to operate the engine until no water vapors come off the fins.
Two types of plugging by mud are mud splatter and mud impregnation. Mud splatter may be easily removed. Turn the engine off. Spray
