Information:

show that some ripper shanks have had a failure because of the application of hard facing weld beads or the wrong use of a welder or cutting torch. The correct procedure is given in Special Instruction, Form SEHS7888.
If holes in the ripper shank must be changed or made larger, be sure the change does not cause a stress concentration. Some causes of a stress concentration are: 1. A sharp radius on the edge of a hole.2. A rough surface in the bore or on the edge of a hole.3. A sharp nick, notch, crack, burr or scratch in the bore or on the edge of a hole.
Careful work with a grinder can remove many causes of a stress concentration.
