Illustration 1. The 6V97 Engine Stand.It has swing-up braces (supports that move up at one end) that hold an engine at an angle for the removal or installation of the oil pan, crankshaft, camshaft, pistons and covers. See Illustration 2.
Illustration 2. The 6V97 Engine Stand with the swing-up supports in the raised postion.The stand has cast iron, 203.2 mm (8") diameter, 76.2 mm (3") wide wheels. The wheels are equipped with a polyurethane tread. The tread has a resistance to grease, oil and most other solutions which could cause damage and will not make marks on floors.
The stand can be moved with a 1P90 Wheel Dolly to give support to the front end of the stand. See Illustration 3. Heavier engines can be pulled through the reconditioning area mechanically. The stand can also be lifted from two sides with the forks on a lift truck. Openings for the forks are provided in the main frame of the stand. The design of the openings prevents the stand from becoming tilted when it is lifted on the forks.
Illustration 3. The 6V97 Engine Stand with the 1P90 Wheel Dolly.The 6V97 Engine Stand holds the engine 50.8 mm (2") higher than the former engine stand. This difference does not prevent use of the new engine stand with dynamometers that are adjusted to the correct 711.2 mm (28") height for use with the former engine stand. If a new dynamometer is installed, the centerline of the new dynamometer should be adjusted to a height of 762 mm (30").
The 6V97 Engine Stand is normally used with the 9S9081 Sling Assembly, the 9S9060 Roll-Over Hoist and 9S9090 Lifting Eyes to turn the engine during disassembly and assembly. Special Instruction GMGO0576 can be used as a general reference for the use of these tools and for instructions on how to put the engine on the stand.
When the engine stand is used with a 3208 Engine, a D348 Engine or a 3412 Engine, a modification must be made to the supports. Make the modification according to the FT1530 drawing for the 3208 Engine. This modification will give clearance for the starting motor. For the D348 Engine and the 3412 Engine make the modification according to the FT1513 drawing to give clearance for the oil coolers. These drawings are available from division service managers. The stand can still be used for engines of other sizes after the modifications have been made.
