Information:
MID 087 - Chassis ECMCID 1603 - Machine ECMFMI 09 - Abnormal Update RateThis diagnostic code indicates the chassis ECM does not receive expected information from the machine ECM for more than 5 seconds. This information is transmitted through the Cat® data-link .The following can cause this code:
Incorrect ECM software
Incorrect ECM
Harness failure
ECM failureSystem Response:
Events are logged against an ECM that cannot be explained directly
The chassis ECM cannot communicate with the machine ECM
The communication between the two ECMs is intermittentTest Step 1. VERIFY PART NUMBERS
Verify that the following part numbers are correct:
Chassis ECM
Chassis ECM software
Machine ECM
Machine ECM flash softwareNote: Consult the product business unit for the correct part numbers.Expected Result:All part numbers are correct. Results:
OK - All part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - All part numbers are not correct. Repair: Install the correct ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".Flash the correct software. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".STOPTest Step 2. INSPECT HARNESS
Turn off the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Inspect the harness. Clean the harness connector contacts.Inspect the harness connector contacts for corrosion or damage. Inspect the wire insulation for damage caused by heat, corrosion, or chafing.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each circuit wire.
Reconnect all harness connectors. Verify that the connectors are fully seated and the clips are fastened.
Check for intermittent problems. Using Cat Electronic Technician (Cat ET), perform a wiggle test on the harness. Expected Result:The harness is in good condition. Results:
OK - The harness is in good condition. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The harness is not in good condition.Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK FOR SHORTS TO GROUNDThe keyswitch and the disconnect switch remain off.
Disconnect the harness from all ECMs that use the Cat data-link.
At the harness for the chassis ECM, measure the resistance between frame ground and connector contacts J1-10 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and J1-20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the Cat data-link circuit. Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short between frame ground and the Cat data-link circuit.Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 4. CHECK FOR SHORTS TO +BATTERYThe keyswitch and the disconnect switch remain off.All related ECMs remain disconnected from the harness.
At the harness connector for the chassis ECM, perform the following checks:
Measure the resistance between the +battery connector contact J1-31 (wire 173-RD(Red)) and connector contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN(Green)).
Measure the resistance between the +battery connector contact J1-31 (wire 173-RD(Red)) and connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)).Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 5.
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short between the +battery and the Cat data-link circuit.Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 5. CHECK FOR OPENSThe keyswitch and the disconnect switch remain off.All related ECMs remain disconnected
