There is a potential for some rear wheel bearing failures on the 785B Off Highway Trucks fitted with Wheel Groups (144-354). The bearing cones may fail due to insufficient heat treated rollers. The rollers are used in both the inner Bearing Cone (138-8719) and the Outer Bearing Cone (138-8722) on the rear wheels. The bearing cones in question are only on wheel groups sent from the factory. The parts procured through the parts system do not have this problem.

Magnetic plugs in the final drive covers must be monitored at least two times per week for rear wheel bearing failures. If a bearing cone fails on one side of the truck the other side needs to be removed, cleaned, and inspected for contingent damage and insufficient heat treat of bearings.
When a rear wheel bearing failure occurs the final drive screen assembly should be removed and replaced with shims and the retainer should be checked for the enlarged oil drain holes. (20.0mm diameter) If not the retainer should be reworked or replaced with a new retainer (106-6540) from parts dept.
