Information:
1100 And 3100 Series, and 3208 Engines In All Except Marine ApplicationsDescription of Change: The oil capacity of the engine crankcase has been increased from 11.35 to 13.24 liters (12 to 14 quarts), and the minimum oil level when oil is to be added has been changed from 8.51 to 11.35 liters (9 to 12 quarts). This increase in oil capacity will make sure the engine has enough oil for good lubrication in all conditions of operation.Adaptable To: All earlier 1100 and 3100 Series, and 3208 Engines except those used in marine applications. Information about a similar change to the 3160 and 3208 Marine Engines is in the article "Crankcase Capacity Increased; New Dimensions For Marks On Oil Level Gauge" on Page 2 of the January 9, 1980 Engine News. Each of the new oil level gauges shown in the chart is a direct replacement for the former part, which is canceled.
If desired, existing gauges can be changed to show the new oil level. For this purpose, the chart shows the necessary dimensions and specifications for the new gauges, in addition to the new end former part numbers. For conversion of a former oil level gauge, the marks can be ground off and new marks added at the dimensions shown in the chart. The gauge can also be cut to the new length shown, but if this is done on a gauge that is twisted near the end, it must be twisted again after it is cut to length. See the illustrations and the chart.

Illustration 4. Reference letters are shown in the chart.INSTALLATION: When a conversion is made to a former oil level gauge, be sure to clean the gauge thoroughly before installation. When the engine oil level is changed, either by conversion of the existing gauge or installation of a new gauge, use the procedure that follows:
1 Drain the oil from the crankcase end install new oil filters.2 Install the oil level gauge and fill the crankcase with 13.24 liters (14 quarts) of the correct type and grade of oil as shown in the guide sent with the engine from the factory. For engines that have special equipment (like an auxiliary filter) which has an effect on crankcase capacity, adjust the amount of oil used to fill the crankcase as necessary.3 Start the engine and run until the engine temperature is normal, then stop the engine.4 After an interval of not less than ten minutes, check the oil level. If the oil level is not at the "FULL" mark, check the dimensions used and/or check to be sure the correct gauge is in the engine.Use of this installation procedure permits a double check to make sure the engine has the correct amount of oil for the specific design and application of the engine.
