Disassembly Procedure (Type 1)
Start By:
Remove the engine oil filter base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Filter Base - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove the four bolts and two covers (1) .

Remove spring (5) and oil cooler bypass valve (3). Mark spring (5) and oil cooler bypass valve (3) for the location in the oil filter base.
Remove spring (4) and oil filter bypass valve (2). Mark spring (4) and oil filter bypass valve (2) for the location in the oil filter base.Disassembly Procedure (Type 2)

Remove the engine oil filter base from the engine block.
Remove two plugs (1) that hold the valves in the engine oil filter base.

Remove spring (4) and (5). Remove valve (2) and (3). Put identifying marks on the springs and valves.

Check the condition of O-ring seals (6) and (7) for wear or damage. If the O-ring seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
