Tube (Nut) Reusability
The tube (nut) can be removed from the damaged tube assembly and reused if the slots are in good condition. The weld joint end will require machining to the dimensions shown.Changes have been made to the D8L frames since the original design, resulting in two versions of roller frames. Early version frames have a longer tube (nut) which has a length of 450 mm (17.7"). Later version frames have a shorter tube (nut) which has a length of 425 mm (16.7").The service tube assembly is of the newer design and requires a shorter nut 425 mm (16.7"). Both styles of tube (nut) can be machined to the dimensions shown below and reused.Repair Procedure
The following procedure explains the repair process for a front track roller frame which has had a complete tube separation.1. Wash the roller frame to remove all dirt, grease and oil.
Plates removed.2. Use an air carbon arc or flame cutting torch or similar tool to remove plates (1), (2) and (3). Save these plates for later use. After the plates are removed, remove the broken tube section from the box assembly. 3. Grind the box assembly area smooth.
Lifting eye installed.4. Weld a lifting eye to the top of the box assembly as shown. This is used to hoist the box assembly onto the fixture.
Inner ring in position.5. Clean the four bogie bores in the box assembly with a die grinder and a metal surfacing disc.6. Install Rings B (part of FT 2256 tooling) in the inner bores and place the box assembly onto the fixture. 7. Carefully align the bogie bores with the bores in the fixture as shown. 8. Slide the shaft (part of FT 2256 tooling) through the bogie and the fixture bores as shown.
Remaining rings installed.9. Install Rings A (part of FT2256 tooling) onto each end of the shaft and into the bogie bores. 10. Level the face of the box section, using the adjusting screw on the fixture.Place the 6Y3544 Tube Assembly onto the fixture and slide it against the face of the box section.Fit the top and bottom of the tube flush, in alignment with, the top and bottom of the box assembly.
O. D. of tube assembly scribed on face of box assembly.11. After alignment, scribe a line around the O.D. of the tube onto the face of the box assembly.
Box assembly rotated.12. Lift the box assembly into a vertical position as shown. 13. Place 7T1428 Ring (4) in the center of the scribed circle and tack weld it to the box assembly on the I.D. 14. Make a 10 mm (0.4") fillet weld on the I.D. of the ring as shown.
Align bulkhead and box assembly.15. Lower the box assembly back onto the fixture and slide the tube back against the face of the box assembly.16. Align the sides of the bulkhead with the arms on the box assembly.
Tack weld tube to box assembly.17. Tack weld the tube to the box assembly using an alternating sequence - bottom, top,
