Information:
Setup Procedure
Start the machine.
Warm up AWD oil by operating in 4F with AWD at maximum aggression.Note: AWD oil temperature should be about 50°C for this test.
Verify the following:
Articulation is straight. (Press the "auto return" to center the button.)
Wheel lean is straight.
Keep the steering wheels as straight as possible during this test. Note: Input of steering angle can affect the pressure readings.
Perform this test on a hard surface free of debris and loose material. The hard surface is preferably concrete or pavement.
Set engine speed to high idle (2150 20 rpm).
Operate the machine in manual AWD mode for each of the gear and aggression combinations provided in Table1 .
On the (S/N: M9D, M9J, M9E, M9K, R9M, R9L, R9G, R9T), record the right-hand and left-hand clutch pressure values. These values are available in the Caterpillar® Electronic Technician (Cat®) ET status screen at each point.Note: Allow a minimum of 10 seconds at each operating point for the pressure reading to stabilize before the readings are recorded.
Table 1
Clutch Pressures for the AWD Road Test.
Position of Aggression Dial    Gear    Expected Pressure
Minimum     4F     2,000 1000 kPa
Minimum     1R     2,000 1000 kPa
Center Detent     4F     16,000 14000 kPa
Center Detent     1R     16,000 14000 kPa
Maximum     4F     39,000 1000 kPa
Maximum     1R     39,000 1000 kPa    Diagnostics
Pressure at minimum aggression is consistently greater than 3,000 kPa and the pressure at maximum aggression is less than 3,000 kPa
The electrical connections are switched from forward to reverse at the clutch solenoids. This reversal can happen on one or both front wheels. Correct wire connections on the front control valve.
The hose connections could be switched from forward to reverse at both the pump and motor connections. Both the pump and motor connections must be corrected.Pressure recorded at minimum aggression is too low
Charge pressure may be low. Perform the Testing and Adjusting, "Piston Pump Charge Pressure - Test" procedure.
The clutch solenoid or the shuttle valve within the control valve may have failed. Perform the Testing and Adjusting, "Solenoid Valve (Control Manifold) - Test" procedure.
The flushing circuit of the motor case may have failed. Perform the Testing and Adjusting, "Piston Motor Case Drain Flow - Test" procedure.
The clutch inside the AWD gearbox may have failed. First perform the above two tests. If neither of the tests indicate a problem, then inspect and replace the AWD clutch assembly.Pressure recorded at minimum aggression is too low
Front tire diameter may be larger than rear tire diameter. Verify the following:
The size of the tires and inflation pressure are similar.
Wear of tread is similar between the front and rear tires.
Steering or articulation angle sensors may be out of calibration. Perform calibration procedures for functions of steering and articulation with Cat ET. See the service manual for the steering system for additional information.
The reading of the speed sensor is faulty. Check Cat ET for logged diagnostics of the speed
