Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a high turbocharger turbine inlet temperature. Also, use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active or logged.
Table 1
J1939 Code and Description CDL Code and Description Comments
1180-0
Turbocharger #1 Turbine Inlet Temperature : High - most severe (3) E246 (3)
High Left Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Temperature The turbocharger turbine temperature is higher than expected.
1180-15
Turbocharger #1 Turbine Inlet Temperature : High - least severe (1) E246 (1)
High Left Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Temperature The turbocharger turbine temperature is higher than expected.
1180-16
Turbocharger #1 Turbine Inlet Temperature : High - moderate severity (2) E246 (2)
High Left Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Temperature The turbocharger turbine temperature is higher than expected.
1181-0
Turbocharger #2 Turbine Inlet Temperature : High - most severe (3) E245 (3)
High Right Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Temperature The turbocharger turbine temperature is higher than expected.
1181-15
Turbocharger #2 Turbine Inlet Temperature : High - least severe (1) E245 (1)
High Right Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Temperature The turbocharger turbine temperature is higher than expected.
1181-16
Turbocharger #2 Turbine Inlet Temperature : High - moderate severity (2) E245 (2)
High Right Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Temperature The turbocharger turbine temperature is higher than expected. If the engine is shut down due to a high turbocharger turbine inlet temperature, the power to the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) must be cycled in order to restart the engine.Probable Causes
Codes
Intake manifold temperature

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check for High Intake Manifold Temperature
Note: A one degree increase in the intake manifold temperature will increase the exhaust temperature by approximately three degrees.
A. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Intake Manifold Air Temperature Is High" for additional information.
Temperature
Result: The intake manifold temperature is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The intake manifold temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Determine the cause of the high inlet air temperature. Repair or replace damaged components.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Valve Lash
Note: The valve lash can affect the performance of the engine.
Valve Lash
Result: The valve lash is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The valve lash is NOT OK.
Repair: Reset the valve lash. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Valve Lash - Adjust" for additional information.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check for High Exhaust Temperature
Temperature
Result: The exhaust temperature is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The exhaust temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Determine the cause of the high exhaust temperature. Repair or replace damaged exhaust components.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Inspect the Inlet Air System
A. Check the air filter restriction indicator, if equipped. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for additional information.
B. Measure the inlet air restriction for each turbocharger. Refer to Troubleshooting,
