Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment.To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position. Refer to the machine Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Battery or Battery Cable - Disconnect" or the Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) for the correct procedure.
If necessary, remove any panels or covers to gain access to the electric starting motor. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual or the Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) for the correct procedure.
Remove the electric starting motor. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.

Flywheel ring gear replacement required
Inspect the flywheel ring gear for damage. Rotate the engine with a suitable tool to inspect the circumference of the flywheel ring gear. Compare the flywheel ring gear wear to the Illustrations below:Note: There will be a concentration of wear at 180° apart on C7.1 engines.Refer to Illustrations 1Refer to Illustrations 2Refer to Illustrations 3Refer to Illustrations 4Refer to Illustrations 5
If necessary, replace the flywheel ring gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Remove" and Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Install" for the correct procedures.
