Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the transmission oil is hot. Hot oil can cause burns. Be cautious of hot transmission oil when any lines are disconnected in the hydraulic system.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system by opening the drain tap. The capacity of the cooling system is 145 L (38.3 US gal). 2. Disconnect hose assembly (2) from transmission cooler (1). Cap and plug the hose and fitting. 3. Disconnect hose assembly (4) from the transmission oil cooler and radiator pipe.4. Loosen the four hose clamps on hose (3) and slide the hose toward the oil cooler. 5. Loosen the four hose clamps on hose (6) and slide the hose along the pipe.6. Remove bolt (5) and the clamp assembly. Remove the radiator pipe. 7. Remove six bolts (7) from the inlet and outlet water pipes to the transmission oil cooler and remove the pipes. Remove the gaskets from both pipes. 8. Remove eight bolts (9) from the oil inlet and outlet hoses to the transmission cooler. Remove the O-ring seals. Cap and plug the hoses and fittings.9. Remove two bolts (8) and the washers. 10. Using two persons to support transmission oil cooler (1). Remove two bolts (12) and the washers. Carefully lower the transmission oil cooler to the ground. The weight of the transmission oil cooler is 43 kg (95 lb).11. Mark bonnet (10) for assembly purposes. Remove six bolts (11) and bonnet (10) from both ends of transmission cooler (1). Remove the gaskets from both end of transmission cooler (1). Remove the gaskets from the ends of the inlet and outlet water pipes to transmission oil cooler (1). 12. Carefully clean the tube bundles in the transmission oil cooler with a 3.2 mm (0.12 inch) diameter rod.
