Grinding away the staked area on the retaining nut is necessary to reduce the chance of damaging the spindle threads as the nut is being removed.
Rework Procedure:
1. During disassembly of the gear reducer or support housing, inspect the spindle locknut.2. If the existing locknut is the staked type, use a die grinder to remove the staked areas of the nut while trying not to damage the spindle threads.3. When the staked areas of the nut have been removed, lubricate the spindle threads and slowly remove the nut.4. Be sure that there is not excessive resistance when removing the nut or more grinding may be required.
