Information:

terminal P1-36 (start relay) and terminal P1-61 (start relay return) from the ECM connector. Install the jumper wire into the terminal locations for the start relay.
Connect the J1/P1 ECM connectors.
Restore the electrical power to the ECM.
Observe the "Active Diagnostic" screen on the electronic service tool. Wait at least 30 seconds so that any codes may become active.
Turn the keyswitch to the START position.
Observe the "Active Diagnostic" screen on the electronic service tool. Wait at least 30 seconds so that any codes may become active.
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Remove the wire jumper. Return all wiring to the original configuration. Expected Result:There is an active 444-6 diagnostic code.Results:
OK - A 444-6 became active when the jumper was installed at the ECM connector. The ECM is operating correctly.Repair: There is an open circuit in the harness between the ECM connector and the connector for the start relay. Repair the circuit or replace the harness.Use the electronic service tool in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOP
Not OK - A 444-5 remained active when the jumper was installed at the ECM connector.Repair: Perform the following procedure:
Make sure that the latest flash file for the application is installed in the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Flash Programming".
Use the electronic service tool to check for active diagnostic codes.
If a diagnostic code is still active, contact the technical communicator at a Caterpillar dealer. Note: This consultation can greatly reduce the repair time.
If necessary, install a test ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Replacing the ECM".
Use the electronic service tool to verify that the fault is eliminated.
If the fault is eliminated with the test ECM, reconnect the suspect ECM. Verify that the active diagnostic code returns.
If the active diagnostic code returns with the suspect ECM, replace the ECM. STOPTest Step 5. Create an Open Circuit at the Harness Connector for the Start Relay
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Disconnect the connector for the start relay.
Restore the electrical power to the ECM.
Observe the "Active Diagnostic" screen on the electronic service tool. Wait at least 30 seconds so that any codes may become active.
Turn the keyswitch to the START position.
Observe the "Active Diagnostic" screen on the electronic service tool. Wait at least 30 seconds so that any codes may become active.
Remove the electrical power from the ECM. Connect the connector for the start relay. Expected Result:There is an active 444-5 diagnostic code.Results:
OK - A 444-5 became active when the connector for the start relay was disconnected. The ECM and the harness to the connector are OK.Repair: The short circuit is in the start relay. Replace the start relay. Clear any diagnostic codes.Use the electronic service tool in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOP
Not OK - A 638-6 remained active when the connector for the start relay was disconnected. Proceed to Test Step 6.Test Step 6. Create an Open Circuit at the ECM
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Disconnect the J1/P1
