8S2263 Valve Spring Tester. When a slack adjuster operates (strokes) correctly, there is always a small amount of pressure on the piston in the service brakes after the brakes are released. A failure (incorrect stroking) in a slack adjuster may cause too much master cylinder stroke.Use this procedure to check for a failure in a slack adjuster.1. Make sure there is enough air pressure in the system to engage the brakes.2. Push a brake pedal to engage the brakes.3. Release the brakes and immediately open one of the bleed valves marked (S) on one of the rear axle housings.4. If oil comes out with pressure, the slack adjuster on that side is stroking correctly.5. Open the bleed valve marked (S) on the other side.6. If oil comes out with pressure, the slack adjuster for that side is stroking correctly.7. If there is no pressure from one or both of the sides, there is a failure in the slack adjuster piston or there is a bad leak at the brake piston seals.8. Remove the slack adjuster that may have a failure.9. Disassemble and check the slack adjuster as follows: a. Remove the piston from the housing.b. Install a 6.35 mm (.250 in) diameter by 31.8 mm (1.25 in) long rod into the hole of the piston as shown.c. Use an 8S2263 Valve Spring Tester to check the movement of the small piston inside the piston.
Check Of Small Piston Movementd. Put the piston in the tester and put a force on the rod as shown.e. If 220 N (50 lb) of force on the rod does not cause the small piston to move, replace the piston with a new one.10. If the slack adjuster is not damaged, check for damaged oil seals and brake oil leakage in the brake piston seals. After the piston has been checked or replaced, the air must be removed from the brake system.
Air must not be in the oil for the brake hydraulic system. Air in the system can prevent complete brake application and it is possible that the wheels on the vehicle can not be stopped.
Check Front Wheel Brake Linings For Wear
Front Brake Cross Section (Caliper Disc)
(1) Disc. (2) Lining thickness. (3) Carrier-lining assemblies. (4) Calipers. (5) Disc thickness.Check Linings
Carrier-lining (3) is part of the stationary brake caliper (4). There are two carrier-linings for each caliper. Rotation disc (1) rotates between the two carrier-linings causing lining wear. The linings can be visually checked for thickness (2). The carrier-lining assembly must be replaced when the minimum thickness is 3.20 mm (.125 in).Check Disc
Disc (1) should be checked for damage or wear. Replacement should be made when the minimum thickness (5) is 15.87 mm (.625 in).Check Pin Clearance
