Inside cab on right side (4) Ride control switchThe ride control switch (4) allows the operator to select the following positions: ON, OFF and AUTO.Note: The ride control switch (4) should be switched to the AUTOMATIC position or to the OFF position during the loading cycle. This is especially important during the bucket down operation. Failure to position the switch for the ride control system in the recommended position could result in machine damage.

Hitch area (right) (2) AccumulatorWhen the ride control switch is in the ON position, the transmission ECM will continually energize the ride control solenoid and oil will flow between lift cylinder and the ride control accumulators. When the ride control switch is in the OFF position, the transmission ECM will de-energize the ride control solenoid. At this time, the flow of oil between lift cylinder and the ride control accumulators will be blocked.When the ride control switch is in the AUTOMATIC, the transmission ECM will energize the ride control solenoid when the machine ground speed is above 9.7 km/h (6 mph) in forward gears or above 3.2 km/h (2 mph) in reverse gears. Forward and reverse activation speeds are programmable through Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). The speeds can be configured from 2 to 23 km/h (1 to 14 mph).When the ride control solenoid is energized, pilot pressure at the selector spool in ride control valve (3) flows to the hydraulic tank. The spring moves the selector spool in order to connect the head end of lift cylinders (1) with ride control accumulators (2). A floating piston in each accumulator separates the oil from the nitrogen gas. Since the nitrogen gas can be compressed, the nitrogen serves as a cushion. Any downward force on the lift arms is transferred through the oil at the head end of the lift cylinders to the accumulators.The force on the oil is transmitted to the accumulator pistons. This compresses the nitrogen. Compressing the nitrogen gas absorbs the displaced oil and the pressure spike that is caused by the downward force on the lift arms. This results in fewer shocks on structures and on components, reduced flexing of the tires, and greater load retention.The ride control system contains
