Connections of the Cat Data Link
This diagnostic code is associated with the communication between the "Transmission/Chassis ECM" and the Messenger that is conducted over the Cat Data Link. The FMI 09 diagnostic code means that the "Transmission/Chassis ECM" has lost communication with the Messenger. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
An open or a faulty connection in the Cat Data Link circuit
The Messenger has failed. This is unlikely.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: If the Messenger is not operating correctly, refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR9034 for information on troubleshooting the Messenger. Ensure that the CID 0967 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. Check the Messenger for correct operation before performing this procedure.Test Step 1. CHECK THE DATA LINK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the connector of the machine harness J1 from the "Transmission/Chassis ECM". Disconnect the machine harness connector from the Messenger.
Inspect the harness connectors and clean all of the contacts of the harness connectors. Refer to the illustration above in order to check the connection of the Cat Data Link on each of the machine harness connectors. Ensure that the wires are secured in the connector and in good condition.
At the disconnected harness connectors, measure the resistance from the contact of ECM connector J1-10 (wire 893-GN(Green)) to contact of the Messenger 6 (wire 893-GN(Green)).
At the disconnected harness connectors, measure the resistance from ECM connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) to Messenger contact 5 (wire 892-BR(Brown)). Expected Result:Both of the resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms.Results:
OK - Both of the resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms. The Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness is not open. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - At least one of the resistance measurements is more than 5 ohms.Repair: There is an open or a bad connection in the Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness. Refer to the complete Electrical System Schematic of the machine. Locate all the connectors and examine all of the connectors of the machine harness that are involved in the data link circuit. Check each wire section from connector to connector for an open or a bad connection. Ensure that all connections are clean, that all connections are secure and that all connections are in good condition. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the data link circuit.
Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated. Observe that the clips for each connector are completely fastened.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Check the status of the CID 0967 FMI 09 diagnostic code. Expected Result:The CID 0967 FMI 09 diagnostic code is not active. Results:
