Understanding Programmable Engine RPM Limits
Note: Many programmable parameters affect the engine operation. These parameters may be changed with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). The parameters are stored in the ECM. The parameters are not stored in the personality module. Any parameter can be read. However, passwords protect parameters from unauthorized changes. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Customer Specified Parameters Table" for more information.There are four programmable engine rpm limits that are available.Note: The Top Engine Limit is not a programmable feature on the October 2001 and newer software for the Medium-Duty Engines and the January 2002 and newer software for the Heavy-Duty Engines..Top Engine Limit (TEL) - The TEL is used while the vehicle is being driven on the road. The TEL determines the maximum rpm when the PTO On/Off Switch is in the OFF position.Idle RPM Limit - The "Idle RPM Limit" is the maximum of the engine rpm limit if the engine rpm is established by using the Cruise Control On/Off switch and the Cruise Control Set/Resume switch. The programmable range of the "Idle RPM Limit" is from 700 rpm to the TEL in one rpm increments. The minimum programmable Idle RPM Limit is determined by the programmed Low Idle RPM. The maximum programmable "Idle RPM Limit" is limited by the Top Engine Limit.PTO Top Engine Limit - The "PTO Top Engine Limit" is the maximum engine rpm limit when the PTO On/Off switch is ON. The "PTO Top Engine Limit" has a programmable range from 700 rpm to the TEL in one rpm increments. The minimum programmable "PTO Top Engine Limit" is actually determined by the programmed Low Idle rpm. The maximum programmable "PTO Top Engine Limit" is the TEL.Fast Idle Engine RPM Limit - The "Fast Idle RPM Limit" is the maximum rpm set speed that uses the Fast Idle Enable switch. The programmable range is 700 rpm to the TEL in one rpm increments. The operator can override the programmed "Fast Idle RPM". Depress the accelerator pedal and toggle the Fast Idle Enable switch when the engine is at the desired rpm. This rpm would then be the "Fast Idle RPM" until the engine is shut down.Note: The Fast Idle Option is not available on the C-10, C11, C-12, C13, 3406E, C15, C-15, C-16, and C-18 engines.Available Ranges, Options, and Default Settings for the Programmable Parameters
