Start By:a. Install the steering frame lock pin. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock Pin - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This will help prevent fluid loss and this will help to prevent contaminants from entering the system. 1. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (1) (if equipped) from the rod end of the steering cylinder. 2. Remove nut (2) from the steering cylinder rod end collet assembly. 3. Remove bolt (3) and the washer from the steering cylinder rod end collet assembly. 4. Use Tooling (A) to remove the upper collet. Tighten the forcing bolts evenly to remove the collet.5. Use Tooling (A) to remove the lower collet.6. Remove the pin and shims (if equipped) from the rod end of the steering cylinder. Put identification marks on the shims for correct installation.7. Start the engine. Fully retract the steering cylinder. Stop the engine.8. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced. 9. Disconnect steering cylinder hose assemblies (4) and (5). 10. Remove O-ring seals (6) and (7) from the steering cylinder fittings. 11. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (8) from the head end of the steering cylinder. 12. Remove the four bolts and the washers that hold cover (9) to the rear frame. Remove the cover. 13. Remove nut (10) from the steering cylinder head end collet assembly. 14. Remove bolt (11) and the washer from the steering cylinder head end collet assembly. 15. Use Tooling (A) to remove the upper collet. Tighten the forcing bolts evenly to remove the collet.16. Use Tooling (A) to remove the lower collet. 17. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to steering cylinder assembly (12), as shown.18. Remove the pin and shims (if equipped) from the head end of the steering cylinder. Put identification marks on the shims for correct installation.19. Remove the steering cylinder assembly from the rear frame. The weight of the steering cylinder assembly is 90 kg (198 lb).
