Brake Modification H D9N (1JD1-Up), D10N (2YD1-Up), D11N (74Z1-Up)
Occurances of intermittent loss of steering clutch pressure have been reported. Typically, when pulling either the right or the left steering lever, the opposite side clutch pressure appears to drop out. When the problem exists, the clutch pressure is at or below 200 psi. Initial investigations in the field indicate that the clutch piston seal/thrust plate seals are not expanding against the outside diameter for proper sealing.
To ensure that the seals are expanding against the outside diameter, it is recommended that the thrust plate and piston seal areas be reworked.
Disassemble the clutch to expose the piston and thrust plate sealing area.

Use a Dremel grinder or a similar device for this modification. Both the thrust plate and piston should be ground in four locations. Refer to Illustration 17. This modification allows pressurized oil to fill under the seal lip and force it out against the bore.

Remove one 9W-7480 Piston, one 9W-7419 Spring (Wave), and one 7T-6994 Plate (adjacent to wave spring).1b. Add one 6T-0235 Piston and one 3T-3602 Ring (between back of piston and belleville spring). If the brake module was previously converted to a seven disc configuration, the above changes should have already been done. The change to a seven disc brake is no longer recommended. When completed, either brake pack should be equipped with five plates (106-7438) and six disc assemblies (8P-4316). A disc assembly should be positioned at both ends of the pack. (Refer to the D8L). Piston travel should measure 4.6 2.2 mm (.18 .09 in) after assembly.1c. Check flatness of the end retainer assembly to determine if the retainer is bellmouthed. Additional evidence of bellmouthing may be a 12 to 25 mm (.5 to .9 in) thick dark ring towards outer diameter of the adjacent disc assembly. Replace, if necessary, with a 6Y-2879 Retainer Assembly. If the brake module was previously converted to a seven disc configuration, remove the end retainer assembly (pilot was cut down to accomodate extra disc/plate) and replace with 6Y-2879 Retainer Assembly.1d.
