Generator Field Poles Removal And Installation
1. Remove the rotating field assembly from the generator. The hub (A) is serviced separately on all generators.2. Remove the bearing, brush holder and yoke. It is not necessary to remove the collector rings (1) from the shaft to remove the field poles.3. Disconnect and remove the wires (4) after marking them for reconnection. Each field pole (3) is dovetailed to the shaft spider (7) and is secured by one wedge (2) from each end. Each wedge is tack welded to prevent it from coming loose.
PREPARING TO REMOVE FIELD POLES
1. Collector ring. 2. Wedge. 3. Field pole. 4. Wires. 5. Weight. A. Hub.4. Bend the locks and remove the bolts and rotor coil supports (B) if so equipped. Some four-pole generators are equipped with laminated rotor coil supports.5. Using a drift the same size as the wedge, drive on the small end of one wedge (2) until the weld breaks. Remove the wedges.
PREPARING TO REMOVE COIL SUPPORTS
B. Rotor coil support.6. Remove the field poles.
INSTALLING FIELD POLE
6. Notch. 7. Spider.7. Make sure the mating members are free of foreign material and install the field pole, aligning the dovetail of the field pole with the notch (6) in the spider (7).
INSTALLING FIELD POLE
2. Wedge.8. Install one wedge, small end first, into each end of the notch and drive the wedge in as far as possible.9. Tack weld the large end of both the wedges.10. Install the rotor coil support, if so equipped.
USING TEMPLATE TO CHECK HEIGHTS OF BOLT HEADS
C. Template.
Before locking the bolts, make certain that all bolt heads are below the outer circumference of the field poles. A template (C) can be constructed and used for this purpose.
11. Connect the wires.12. Balance the rotating field assembly by removing or installing the weights (5). The use of a balancing machine is necessary to determine the number and location of such weights.
