Differential and Bevel Gear (1) Bearing sleeve. (2) Bolt. (3) Adjusting nut. (4) Bearing cone. (5) Bearing cup. (6) Bevel pinion. (7) Bearing cone. (8) Bearing cup. (9) Housing. (10) Bearing cup. (11) Bearing cone. (12) Washer. (13) Nut. (14) Intermediate housing. (15) Differential group. (16) Bevel gear. (17) Bolt. (18) Bearing sleeve. (19) Bolt. (20) Adjusting nut. (21) Differential case. (22) Bearing cone. (23) Bearing cup. (24) Pins. (25) Pin. (26) Pin. (27) Center housing. (28) Shims. (A) Bolt circle radius.Note: The same adjustment is used for both the front pinion assembly and for the rear pinion assembly.
Install bearing cups (8) and (10) in housing (9). The bearing cups must be seated against the shoulders in housing (9) .
Install bearing cone (7) on pinion (6). Bearing cone (7) must be seated against the shoulder on pinion (6). Lubricate bearing cone (7) .
Install pinion (6) in housing (9). Press bearing cone (11) onto the shaft. Leave a small amount of end play. Lubricate bearing cone (11). Lubricate washer (12) and nut (13) and install washer (12) and nut (13) .Note: If you freeze the bearing cups, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cups. The limit for freezing the bearing cups is -29°C (-20°F). Remove any frost and wipe the bearing cups dry. Lubricate the bearing cups with SAE 30W gear oil in order to prevent rusting.Note: If you heat the bearing cones, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cones. The limit for heating the bearing cones is a maximum of 135°C (275°F) for a maximum of four hours. Lubricate the bearing cones with SAE 30W gear oil after the bearing cones have cooled in order to prevent rusting.
Position the assembly vertically in a soft jawed vise. Tighten the vise against the teeth on pinion (6). Tighten an appropriate bolt and an appropriate nut through an outer bolt hole in pinion housing (9) .
Place a 203 mm (8.0 inch) torque wrench on this bolt so that the torque wrench is in line with the center of pinion (6) .
While you rotate housing (9) with the torque wrench, tighten nut (13) until the torque wrench reading corresponds with the value in table 1.
Table 1
Pinion Rolling Torque
Actual Torque at the Pinion     Torque Wrench Reading (1)
New Bearings
0.7 to 1.4 N m (6 to 12 lb in)
0.45 to .90 N m (4 to 8 lb in)
Used Bearings
0.35 to 0.7 N m (3 to 6 lb in)
0.23 to 0.45 N m (2 to 4 lb in)
( 1 ) These readings are applicable when you are using a 203 mm (8.0 inch) torque wrench.Make sure that there is zero end play of pinion shaft (6) .
If the pinion rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off nut (13) by
