Do not install bearing cone (9) on the shaft more than five inches (127.0 mm) from end of shaft. The bearing cone will be pushed into the correct position when the pinion gear is installed.
8. Install O-ring seal (11) on retainer (10).9. Install Duo-Cone seal in each retainer with tool (A). The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of seals, put oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals.10. Install retainer on shaft. 11. Install spacer (12) in retainer with notches in spacer toward Duo-Cone seal. 12. Install O-ring (13) in retainer. Install retainer (14) on shaft. 13. Put 4S9416 Anti-Seize Compound on the shaft and pinion gear splines. Put pinion gear (15) in position on end of shaft with hole in pinion gear in alignment with dowel in retainer (14). 14. Push the pinion gear into position on the shaft with tooling (B). The pinion gear is in the correct position when the retainer (16) is against the end of the shaft. 15. Install O-ring seal (17), retainer (16) and bolt.16. Put shaft in position on tool (F). Fasten a hoist to housing and put it in position over shaft.17. Install a 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolt in shaft. Fasten a hoist and lift the shaft into position into housing. Make sure dowel in retainer (10) goes into hole in cage assembly.18. Put a floor jack under pinion and output shaft as a support. Remove hoist and eyebolt from shaft. 19. Heat the two bearing cones for gear (18) in oil to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Put the bearing cones on the gear. Make sure the bearing cones are tight against the gear when installed.20. Put gear (18) in position in housing. 21. Put 4S9416 Anti-Seize Compound on the shaft and splines in gear (20).22. Fasten a hoist and put gear (20) in position on shaft.23. Install retainer (19) and three 5/8"-11 NC bolts 3 1/4 in. long. Push the gear (20) on the output shaft with the bolts. Remove the longer bolts and install the original bolts. Do not push the gear (20) completely on the output shaft before the bolt in pinion is tightened.24. Install a 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolt in the housing. Install a strap through gear (20) and around the eyebolt to keep the gear from turning. 25. Tighten bolt (21) for the pinion gear to a torque of 880 80 lb.ft. (121.7 11.1 mkg) with tool (D).26. Tighten the three bolts in retainer (19) until there is no end play and no preload on the output shaft bearings. This will normally be about 5 lb.in. (5.8 cm.kg) torque on the bolts. Retainer (10) must be tight against cage assembly and retainer (14) must be tight against pinion gear when gap is measured. 27. Measure the gap between the two retainers (10) and (14) with a feeler gauge. The gap must be .090 .020 in. (2.29
