Three-piece and two-piece track carrier roller assemblies.--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Replacement rims are now available for three piece carrier rollers in many different machines. See the chart at the end of this article. The advantage of the three-piece roller is that only the rims need to be replaced when worn, not the complete roller.
As shown in Illustration 1, the three-piece roller has a replacement rim pressed on each end of the hub. Any type of carrier roller, even a three-piece roller, must be completely disassembled and inspected as a normal part of the reconditioning process. Any damaged internal components, such as Duo-Cone seals or bearings, must be replaced. See Bulletin MP-11, "Track Roller, Carrier Roller and Idler Disassembly and Assembly Procedures," in the Undercarriage Reconditioning Guide for complete information.

Replacement rims are removed and installed with a roller idler press. As shown in Illustration 2, three FT tools are needed to adapt the press for rim removal. The FT1852 Bracket is used to lift the carrier roller into place in the press. The bracket is thinner than the one normally used with a roller idler press. This permits the bracket and the FT1849 Reaction Plate to both fit between the rim flanges during rim removal. The design of the FT1852 Bracket also permits it to be used with the FT1851 Adapter. See Illustration 3.

Illustration 3. Rim removal.Select the correct size puller ring from the accessory tools normally used with the press. The ring must have a diameter large enough to cover a maximum amount of the end of the carrier roller hub. Be sure to check the alignment of the puller ring to make sure that it is not in contact with the roller rim. Press the rim off from one side of the hub, then turn the hub end-for-end and press the other rim off.
Rim Installation
A carrier roller hub can be re-rimmed several times. Illustration 4 shows a hub that was broached (scratched) from the installation and removal of the rims. It can be used again if 50% or more of the original hub surface is not broached. There must also be an interference fit of at least 0.18 mm (.007") between the outside diameter of the hub and the inside diameter of the new rim. Illustration 5 shows a badly broached hub. It cannot be used again.
Illustration 4. Broached hub. Use again.
Illustration 5. Do not use again. Broach marks cover more than 50% of hub surface. To install a new set of rims, place one rim in the press blocks as shown in Illustration 6. Select the correct size puller ring and press the hub into the rim. Turn the hub and rim end-for-end and press the other rim on in the same way.
Use the chart which follows to order the individual roller rims.
