Introduction
The solution to this problem has been communicated in the publication that is listed below. Generator sets are installed in many different applications. It is necessary to provide the proper ventilation. Proper ventilation will allow the generator set to operate continually with proper cooling of the generator.The Application and Installation Guide, LEBW4971, "Engine Room Ventilation " guide should be reviewed for proper considerations for engine rooms. Failure to review the Application and Installation Guide, LEBW4971, "Engine Room Ventilation " can lead to failure of the generator.Note: The Application and Installation Guide, LEBW4971, "Engine Room Ventilation " is available in paper only and must be ordered through the normal literature distribution system.Note: For lifting the product, reference Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6916, "3500B and 3500 Generator Set Engines with EUI Option".Problem
The main stators with the 690 and 820 frame are failing on units in applications with incorrect ventilation.Incorrect ventilation can cause air to recirculate down the inside of the right rail of the engine. This will result in the failure of the main stator.Solution
Reduce the clearance between the generator and the support of the generator in order to restrict air from recirculating.Required Parts

Location for PlateInstall 318-2446 Plate to 690 Frame for the Generator.
Place 318-2446 Plate to 188-4411 Engine Support . Ensure that 318-2446 Plate is positioned against the barrel of the generator.
Drill eleven holes through 318-2446 Plate and through 188-4411 Engine Support . See Illustration 1. Drill only through the first plate of the 188-4411 Engine Support .
Use 129-1063 Rivet Tool and eleven 033-9412 Rivets to attach 318-2446 Plate to 188-4411 Engine Support .Install 318-2445 Plate to 820 Frame for the Generator.
Place 318-2445 Plate to 188-4410 Engine Support . Ensure that 318-2445 Plate is positioned 3.2 mm (0.125 inch) from barrel of the generator.
Drill eleven holes 4.7 mm (0.185 inch) with a depth of 27 mm (1 inch). Drill holes through 318-2445 Plate and through 188-4410 Engine Support . See Illustration 1. Drill only through the first plate of the 188-4410 Engine Support .
Use eleven 163-3274 Machine Screws to attach 318-2445 Plate to 188-4410 Engine Support . Torque the 163-3274 Machine Screws to 27 N m (20 lb ft).Note: The plate may be secured to the frame with less than eleven fasteners.
