Component Code(s) 1404SUBJECT: 3054 and 3056 Marine Genset Charging Alternator Fails to Charge Battery
PROBLEM:
For 12VDC standard and premium controllers without external components fitted, the built in resistor value is too high providing insufficient excitation current to the charging alternator. Refer to Solution 1.
For 12VDC standard and premium controllers with external components fitted, insufficient excitation current may be supplied to the charging alternator due to either incorrect resistor value or incorrect diode orientation. Refer to Solution 2.
For 12VDC/24VDC MCS controllers, insufficient or no excitation current may be supplied to the charging alternator due to either incorrect resistor value or incorrect diode orientation. Refer to Solution 3.

Solution 1: Standard and premium controllers without external components fitted
Remove link wire between controller terminal 8 ("Charging Alt." Or "W/L") and controller terminal 4 (Fuel).
Fit three off terminals (part number 206-9527), and one off terminal cover (part number 219-9127) to din rail.
Fit a 1A diode (part number 143-5090) and 51 ohm resistor (part number 239-2059) to the three terminals as shown in Figure 1. Ensure correct orientation of the diode as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.
Check that the output of the charging alternator is correct (approximately 14.4VDC for 12VDC systems and approximately 28.8VDC for 24VDC engines).
Solution 2: Standard and premium controllers with external components fitted
Check that there is a diode and resistor in series to the charging alternator input, wire 19.
Check that the diode orientation is correct as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.
Check that the resistance value is 51 ohms. If the resistance value is not 51 ohms, replace the existing resistor with a 51 ohm resistor (part number 239-2059).
Check that the output of the charging alternator is correct (approximately 14.4VDC for 12VDC systems and approximately 28.8VDC for 24VDC engines).
Solution 3: MCS control panels
Check that there is a diode and resistor in circuit between Wire 8 ("Fuel") and Wire 19 ("Charge Alt.").
Check that the diode orientation is correct as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.
Check that the resistance value is approximately 51 ohms for 12VDC panels and between 51 ohms and 150 ohms for 24VDC panels. Replace with 51 ohm resistor (part number 239-2059) as required.
Check that the output of the charging alternator is correct (approximately 14.4VDC for 12VDC systems and approximately 28.8VDC for 24VDC engines).
