Introduction
This instruction provides the necessary information to repair the frame and 3-point hitch mounting plates on Challenger 65 tractors.Rework Procedure
1. Remove the 3-point hitch and/or drop box of the power take off (PTO). Access will be improved if the tractor is driven onto blocks to raise the rear of the tractor.
(A) PTO Mounting Blocks. (B) Braces.2. The four PTO mounting blocks (A) on the rear face of the case will be used to locate the new hitch mounting pads. To maintain position of the PTO mounting blocks, weld three braces (B) horizontally between the vertical plates to which the four PTO mounts are welded.Brace specifications: Solid bar, square, or rectangular steel tube.Length: 400 mm (15.75") nominal, cut to fit.Width: 38.1 mm (1.50") minimum.Thickness: 25.4 mm (1.00") minimum.
(C) Rear of differential case. (D) Wrapper Plate.Remove the amount of material from the plate, as shown above.
View after portion of plate removed.3. Remove the existing hitch mounting pads and a portion of the wrapper plates. Clean up cut edges by grinding smooth.
Right side pad. (E) Detail of edges. (F) 35 mm (1.38") Min. after machining. Use 38.1 mm (1.50") or 40 mm (1.57") Standard Thickness. (G) 7/8-9-2B Thread, 8 Holes.
Left side pad. (E) Detail of edges. (F) 35 mm (1.38") Min. after machining. Use 38.1 mm (1.50") or 40 mm (1.57") Standard Thickness. (G) 7/8-9-2B Thread, 8 Holes.
Cover plate, two required. Use ASTM A572 Min. Strength 42,000 PSI.
Gusset 1
Gusset 24. Fabricate the right and left side hitch mounting pads, two cover plates, and two gussets. Use ASTM A572 steel that has a minimum yield strength of 290 MPa (42000 psi). The bolting pads require a machined surface to mate with the three point hitch frame. 5. Fabricate the locating fixture according to drawing above.6. Use eight bolts, to secure mounting pads to the locating fixture. Use four bolts, to secure pads and locating fixture to the PTO mount pads. Bolts may be either 2H3757 or 0S1973. The above fit must be such that no bolt holes or fixture holes are enlarged. No springing of the assembly is permissible. Grinding the edges of the hitch mount pads is permitted to enable a good fit.
(G) Gusset 1. (H) Gusset 2. (J) Hitch Mounting Pad. (K) Cover Plate.7. The large holes in the weld fixture are for tack weld access. Tack weld the hitch mount pads to the inside and outside vertical plates.Using an 8 mm (0.31") bevel weld, weld the two gussets in place as shown.Using an 8 mm (0.31") bevel weld, weld the cover plate and wrapper plate.8. Remove the locating fixture.
(B) Braces9. Using an 8 mm (0.31") minimum bevel weld, weld the sides of the hitch mounting pads. Sequence the weld passes to minimize distortion from excess heat input. Be sure the welds do not extend beyond the finished surface of the hitch mounting pads. Top of weld can not violate the machined plane of the new blocks.10. Remove the three braces installed in Step 2. Grind off welded areas smooth.
