Right Side of Screed (1) Material height sonic sensorMaterial height sonic sensors (1) (left shown) are mounted on the left and right sides of the screed. These components can be used in place of the material height paddles.The material height sonic sensors emit sound waves. The sensors then monitor the time required for the waves to reflect off the paving material and return to the sensor. The elapsed time indicates the amount of paving material present.Paddle sensors (not shown) can be used in place of sonic sensors. During paving operation, the material height paddle rests on the paving material at the outboard side of the auger. The greater the amount of paving material at the end of the auger, the farther the paddle is pushed toward the outside of the machine.The right and left material height sensors provide pulse-width-modulated signals to the machine ECM.

One sensor is located at the end of both conveyors. These components can be used in place of the material height sonic sensors.During paving operation, material height paddle (3) rests on the paving material at the rear end of the conveyor. The greater the amount of paving material at the end of the conveyor, the farther the paddle is pushed toward the rear of the machine. Paddle sensors (2) convert the position of the paddle to an electrical signal. Sonic sensors (not shown) can be used in place of paddle sensors.
