Zinc rods in marine raw water systems decompose with time. On 3176C and 3196 Marine Engines equipped with a fuel cooler on the inlet to the raw water pump (134-7213 and 135-2802 Fuel Cooler Groups), the deteriorating 6L-2281 Zinc Rod in the downstream side (raw water pump inlet side) may break off and damage the impeller of the raw water pump. The illustration shows the location of this particular 6L-2281 Zinc Rod in the fuel cooler groups. Solution:
Remove the 6L-2279 Brass Plug from the downstream side of the fuel cooler assembly. [Note that there is also a 6L-2279 Brass Plug and 6L-2281 Zinc Rod in the upstream side of the fuel cooler assembly. See location (A) in the illustration. Do not remove the brass plug and zinc rod from location (A).] Check to be sure the 6L-2281 Zinc Rod is treaded into the plug. Replace the 6L-2279 Brass Plug with a new 9B-0887 Brass Plug. The new 9B-0887 Brass Plug has no provision for inserting the zinc rod into it. Sufficient zinc rods are still available in the rest of the system. The zinc rods should be checked after every 50 hours of operation as per the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
