At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with the bare hand.Remove the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Mixing Extended Life Coolant (ELC) with other products reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant life. Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specification for premixed or concentrate coolants. Use only Caterpillar Extender with Caterpillar ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations could result in the damage to cooling systems components.

Open access cover (1) for radiator cap (2) .
Slowly loosen the radiator cap in order to release system pressure. Remove the radiator cap.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

It may be necessary to drain some coolant from the radiator so that Caterpillar Extender can be added to the cooling system.
Add Caterpillar Extender to the cooling system. Refer to the following topics for the proper amount of Caterpillar Extender:

Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)"
Inspect the gasket of radiator cap (2). If the gasket is damaged, replace the radiator cap.
Install the radiator cap.
Close access cover (1) for the radiator cap.
