Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement. Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed. Connect the steering frame lock between the front and rear frames before working on the machine.Before operating the machine, place the steering frame lock in the stored position.Failure to place the steering frame lock into the stored position before operating can result in loss of steering.
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Operate the machine for a few minutes in order to warm the hydraulic system oil.Park the machine on level ground. Lower the bucket to the ground and apply slight downward pressure. Engage the parking brake and stop the engine.

Relieve the hydraulic tank pressure by pushing top of breaker relief valve (1) before removing the oil filler cap.

Remove oil filler cap (3) slowly to relieve any remaining pressure.

Note: Hand tighten the NPT pipe nipple. Do not use tools.
Remove hydraulic tank drain plug (5). Install a 1 inch NPT pipe nipple, 88 mm (3.50 inch) long, in the bottom of the tank, to open the internal drain valve. Drain the oil into a suitable container.
Remove the pipe nipple. Clean the drain plug and install the drain plug.
Change the hydraulic system oil filters.ReferenceFor the correct procedure, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hydraulic System Oil Filter - Replace".
Remove the strainer retaining ring. Remove the strainer from hydraulic oil filler tube (4) .
Wash the oil filler cap and the strainer in clean, nonflammable solvent. Allow the oil filler cap and the strainer to dry.
Inspect the oil filler cap gasket. Use a new gasket if the used gasket is damaged. Install the strainer and the retaining ring in the filler tube.
Fill the hydraulic tank with clean oil. Make sure that the oil level is at the "FULL COLD" mark on sight gauge (2). Install filler cap (3) .ReferenceFor information on lubricants and refill capacities, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities".
Start the engine and run the engine at low idle. Check for leaks.
With the oil cold, maintain the hydraulic oil level to the "FULL COLD" mark in sight gauge (2). With the oil at operating temperature, maintain the hydraulic oil level to the "FULL HOT" mark in sight gauge (2). Add more oil, if necessary through filler tube (4) .Note: The oil must be free of bubbles. If bubbles are present in the oil, air is entering the hydraulic system.
