(9) Line to travel motor Illustration 2 shows the major components of the brake valve. The brake valve is mounted on the end of the head of the travel motor. The brake valve directs flow from the travel control valve to the travel motor.The brake valve helps machine braking. The brake valve helps to prevent an overspeed condition when the machine is driven downhill.Flow check valves (6) and (8) prevent the flow of the travel control valve from going back to the travel control valves without first going through the travel motor. The flow check valves prevent flow in the travel motor from returning to the travel control valves without first going through the brake valve.

(9) Line to travel motor When the travel control valve is activated in the FORWARD position, flow enters the left side of the brake valve through line (2). Makeup valve (1) on the left side closes and flow check valve (8) opens. The pressure also goes through internal passages to the left end of counterbalance spool (7). Counterbalance spool (7) shifts to the right.The flow from the travel control valve goes through flow check valve (8) and line (9) to the travel motor. The return oil from the travel motor enters the spring chamber of flow check valve (6) on the right side. The oil flows through the throttling slots around counterbalance spool (7) to the center passage between the two flow check valves. Flow check valve (6) opens and flow returns to the travel control valves through line (4) and to the tank.If the machine is operated in reverse, the flow from the travel control valve enters the right side of the brake valve. The flow through the brake valve is the reverse of the flow in the forward direction.
