The pump foot machining marks have been transferred to the pan rail but the step and depth of wear on pan rail are minimal.
Acceptable To Reuse
Illustration 53 g06237486
Some pump foot machining marks have been transferred & minor fretting on the pan rail have occurred but the step and depth of wear on pan rail are still minimal.
Acceptable To Reuse
Illustration 54 g06237495
About 75% of original surface has been removed with ~50% going deeper than the tooling marks. Additive salvage methods will be required.
Illustration 55 g06237507
Deep fretting, may not be reusable without additive salvage methods.

View of fretting, that may require additive salvage methods.

View of significant material removed, additive salvage methods will be required.
Twin Wire Arc Spray
If the pan rail cannot be salvaged by proper blending or machining, then pan rail can be restored using Twin Wire Arc Spray. Twin Wire Arc Spray is the Caterpillar recommended pan rail salvage method. Applied properly, arc spray can salvage the pan rail to the original parent material specifications. Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF2120, "Thermal Spray Procedures for Engine Cylinder Block Top Surface" for further guidance on spraying the pan rail.Installation of New Scavenge Pump
After reuse or salvage of the pan rail, installation of new scavenge pump is required. Refer to KENR6052Disassembly and Assembly, "C175-16 and C175-20 Engines for Caterpillar Built Machines" for installation procedure.Installation of Camshaft Bearings

Physical damage to the saddle of the main bearing cap
Inspect the main bearing caps for any obvious damage.

Typical example of inspection of flatness on main bearing cap
After the visual inspection, the caps should be measured for flatness. Place the caps on a precise flat surface. If a 0.038 mm (0.0015 inch) feeler gauge can fit under the flat surfaces of the cap, then the cap must be replaced.Note: The flatness of the precise flat surface should only vary 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch).
Inspect the main bores for damage. Feel for galling or high spots on the bores.

(2) Gap between cap and block
Install the main bearing caps on the cylinder block.Note: The location and orientation of the caps is critical.
Inspect the width of the gap between the main bearing cap and the cylinder block. Force the cap to one side. For C175 Engines, the gap should not exceed .08 0.08 mm (0.0032 0.0032 inch). Refer to Illustration 62.
