When replacing the oil pump on 3204 and 3208 Engines, it is important to inspect the crankshaft gear for damage. Incorrect alignment of this gear can result in tooth damage after the engine runs for a period of time. Broken or damaged teeth can cause damage to the oil pump rotor assembly, causing oil pump rotor failure. Replace the oil pump rotor assembly if any damage has occurred.
To correctly align the oil pump gear with the crankshaft gear, make sure the front cover of the oil pump is in full contact with the cylinder block before tightening the front cover retaining bolts. If there is a gap between the cover and block, pull the cover back and turn the oil pump slightly by hand. Repeat if necessary until the cover comes into full contact with the block.
