Remove retaining ring (10) from the groove in gear (8) .

Insert a screwdriver between the splines of gear (6) and of gear (8) . Gently pry against the back of thrust ring (9) in order to begin removing the components as a unit.

Roll gear (8) forward in order to allow the removal of gear (6) and of the assembled components. Remove gear (6) and the assembled components.
Remove gear (8) from the winch.
Place gear (6) and assembled components on a clean work surface. Remove retaining ring (1) and thrust race (2) from shaft (7) . Slide the shaft from the assembled components.
Remove O-ring seal (5) from shaft (7) . Inspect the O-ring seal for wear or for damage. Replace the O-ring seal, if necessary.
Remove bearings (3) and (4) from gear (6) . Remove thrust race (12) , retaining ring (11) , and washer (9) .Disassembly of Upper Bull Gear and Drum
Note: The lower reduction gears must be removed before the upper bull gear can be removed.

Use Tooling (A) and a sling to support drum (23) . The drum weighs approximately 106 kg (233 lb). After the shaft is removed, the drum will rest on the weld blocks in the winch.
Remove bolts (13) , cover (14) , and gasket (15) .
Remove allen head screw (16) which secures bearing locknut (17) . Use Tooling (B) to remove the bearing locknut.

Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to the assembled gear (27) . Gear (27) and shaft (22) must be removed as a unit. The approximate weight of these components is 57 kg (125 lb).
Remove bearing sleeve (18) and bearing (19) . Inspect O-ring seal (18A) for wear or for damage. Replace the O-ring seal, if necessary. Remove the gear and the shaft as a unit.
Inspect the bearing cups for wear or for damage. Replace the cups, if necessary. Use the following procedure to remove the bearing cups from both sides of the winch case: Use a torch to heat the inside of each bearing cup in two places. The areas must be 180° from each other. Heat each area until the bearing cup becomes orange in color. Then allow the bearing cup to cool for 30 minutes. The bearing will slide out of the bore after cooling.

Place bearing sleeve (18) and bearing (19) in a press with Tooling (D) and (E) . Remove the bearing from the bearing sleeve.
Slide bearing (19) from shaft (22) . Remove bearing (24) from inside gear (27) . Remove retaining rings (25) and (26) , and remove the remaining bearing (24) . Remove shaft (22) from gear (27) .

Loosen the top bolts which fasten the fairlead assembly to the winch. Remove the bottom bolts which fasten the fairlead assembly to the winch. Pull the bottom of the fairlead assembly away from the winch. This opening will provide clearance for lowering the drum. Tighten the upper bolts in order to hold the fairlead assembly back
