Prepare the adapter. Use a cutting torch to burn off the end of the adapter. Each adapter must be cut at 8 Degrees in order to obtain the proper tip angle. The sides of the adapter must be cut back to 15 Degrees.Note: Leave a 5 mm (0.2 inch) wide flat surface at the center of the adapter.
Use a disc grinder to clean the flame cut surfaces of any deposits that are left by the cutting process. Use a disc grinder to clean the areas of the replacement adapter nose that will be welded.
The use of improper welding wire or welding rod may cause cracks. Use flux cored wire with hydrogen control and with gas shielding for welds that are flat and horizontal. Use the following wire or an equivalent: AWS E71T-1. Use wire with a diameter of 1.1 mm (0.043 inch) or 1.3 mm (0.051 inch). The wire should have a diffusible hydrogen specification of no more than 5 mL (0.3 in3) per 100 g (0.22 lb) of weld deposit. Suppliers have different recommendations for the shielding gas. When possible, use straight carbon dioxide. You may use the following low hydrogen stick electrodes or an equivalent for all positions: AWS E7018 and E10018. The coating on the stick electrodes absorbs moisture. The coating must be kept dry. Recondition exposed electrodes by heating for two hours at a temperature of 260 °C (500.0 °F).
Hold the adapter nose against the adapter. Tack weld the adapter nose in position. Use a straight edge to span across adjacent adapters in order to locate the adapter nose.
Preheat the end of the adapter and the adapter nose to 204 °C to 260 °C (400 °F to 500 °F). Make a vertical stringer pass and two root passes to
