16. Remove Duo-Cone seals (13) and (15).17. Remove O-ring seal (14).Install Rear Wheel Bearings & Duo-Cone Seals
1. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (2) and (3), and install the bearing cups in wheel assembly (1). Use a hammer and punch to make sure the bearing cups are against the shoulder of the wheel assembly. 2. Put clean final drive oil on O-ring seal (5), and install the O-ring seal on seal retainer (4).3. Put seal retainer (4) in position on wheel assembly (1), and install the bolts that hold it. Refer to the Topic "Installation Of Duo-Cone Floating Seals" in this module for further information.4. Use tool (A) to install Duo-Cone seal (6). 5. Use tool (B) to install Duo-Cone seal (7).6. Use tool (A) to install Duo-Cone seal (8).7. Put clean oil on O-ring seal (9), and put the O-ring seal in position as shown. 8. Use tool (B) to install Duo-Cone seal (11).9. Put clean oil on O-ring seal (10), and put it in position in seal retainer (12). 10. Put clean oil on the Duo-Cone seal, and slide seal retainer (12) into position on the axle housing.
Bearing notches properly positioned over balls (details A and B). There is a notch located in the inner race of bearing cones (14) and (13). When properly positioned, the notches in bearing cones (14) and (13) fit over a ball that is inserted in each of two holes in the axle housing. The ball and notch prevent the inner race of bearings (14) and (13) from rotating on the axle shaft.11. Install the ball used to position bearing cone (13) into the hole in the axle housing closest to seal retainer (12).12. Slide bearing cone (13) into position on the axle housing. Make sure it is properly positioned and the notch of the inner race seats on the ball in the axle housing. 13. Put clean oil on the Duo-Cone seals, and put wheel assembly (1) in position on the axle housing as shown.14. Put a suitable support under the wheel assembly so it will not slide off the axle housing when the hoist is removed.15. Install the ball used to position bearing cone (14) into the hole in the axle housing closest to the spline end of the axle housing.16. Slide bearing cone (14) into position on the axle housing. Make sure it is properly positioned and the notch of the inner race seats on the ball in the axle housing. 17. Use tool (C), and put ring gear and hub (15) in position on the axle housing. 18. Put hub retainer (16) in position without any shims, and install three bolts (17) evenly spaced around the retainer. Tighten the three bolts evenly to a torque of 70 N m (50 lb ft).19. Remove tooling (C) and the support from under the wheel assembly. Install the retainer that holds the ring gear to the hub when tooling (C) was fastened. The brakes can be released by using the
