1. Drain the steering system hydraulic tank.2. Disconnect hoses (1) and (2) from the steering cylinder. Put plugs on the lines and in the cylinder.3. Remove the cotter pin, and loosen nut (3) on each end of the steering cylinder until the nut is even with the bottom of the ballstud.4. Put a jack under the nuts and ballstuds, and apply force to them. Hit the socket area where the ballstuds are seated with a hammer to break them loose from their tapers.5. The weight of the steering cylinder is 63 kg (140 lb.). Secure the steering cylinder to a floor jack, remove two nuts (3) and remove the steering cylinder from the machine. 6. Remove ring (7) and cover (8) from the steering cylinder end. Remove seal (5) from the ballstud.7. Attach a hoist to the cylinder, and position the cylinder end in a press.8. Position a suitable piece of pipe over ballstud (4) and against race (6).9. Press the ballstud and race out of the steering cylinder.10. Do Steps 6-9 for the other ballstud. The following steps are for installation of the steering cylinders.11. Press ballstud (4) and race (6) into the cylinder ends. Install cover (8) and ring (7) on each cylinder end. Install each seal (5) with no lubricant.12. Apply 2P2506 Thread Lubricant to the taper of the ballstuds. Put the steering cylinder in position on the machine with the ballstuds in their respective sockets, and install nuts (3). Tighten nuts (3) to a torque of 1350 N m (1000 lb.ft.). If the cotter pins cannot be installed, tighten the nuts to the next slot, and install cotter pin.13. Install the cotter pins that hold nuts (3).14. Connect hoses (1) and (2) to the steering cylinder.15. Fill the steering system hydraulic tank with oil to the correct level. See the Maintenance Guide.16. Start the machine, and turn the wheels full right and full left several times to remove the air from the steering hydraulic system.17. Check the level of oil in the steering system hydraulic tank again.Disassemble Steering Cylinders
START BY:a. remove steering cylinders 1. Put the cylinder into position on tool (A). 2. Install support (3) under the rod, and fasten strap (2) to hold the rod on the support.3. Remove four bolts (1) and lockwashers from the head. Remove the rod and the head from the cylinder. 4. Remove the nut from the rod with tooling (B).5. Remove piston (4) from the rod. 6. Remove wear ring (5) and seal assembly (6) from the piston. Inspect the seals and ring, and make replacements as needed. 7. Install two 7/8"-9 NC bolts through the head and in the cylinder. Move the rod out of head (7).8. Remove head (7) and the bolts from the cylinders. 9. Remove O-ring seal and back-up ring (8) from outside of the head. Inspect the seal and ring, and make replacements as needed. 10. Remove seals (9) from inside the head. Make replacements as needed.Assemble Steering Cylinders
