Lubricant Information
Certain abbreviations follow Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J754 nomenclature and some classifications follow SAE J183 abbreviations. SPC is a Caterpillar designation for special synthetic oils, that do not contain viscosity improvers. The MIL specifications are U.S.A. Military Specifications. The definitions other than Caterpillar's will be of assistance in purchasing lubricants. The recommended oil viscosities can be found in the "Lubricant Viscosities" chart in this publication.Grease is classified by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) based on ASTM D217-68 Worked Penetration characteristics which are given a defined consistency number.Engine
Cat Engine Oils (DEO and EO)
Caterpillar has two oil formulations to provide maximum performance and life in the engines in Caterpillar machines.* Cat Diesel Engine Oil (DEO)* Cat Engine Oil (EO)Cat Diesel Engine Oil (DEO) (certified as API CD) is blended with a diesel engine type additive with strong detergency effectiveness. This oil has a higher alkalinity (13.5 TBN) than many oils for the neutralization of wear-causing combustion products and provides additional protection for higher fuel sulfur and an occasional extended drain period.Cat Engine Oil (EO) is performance rated as:SAE 10W30 - API CF-4 (new category); API CESAE 15W40 - API CF-4 (new category); API CE; API CD-IISAE 30 - API CD-II; API CDThis oil formulation has strong dispersancy effectiveness along with sufficient alkalinity and low sulfated ash level for the performance requirements of the present day engine designs. By meeting the new API CF-4 performance category, requirements are met for newly designed engines of the future.Commercial Oils
If Cat oils can not be used, the following oil specifications provide guidelines for the selection of commercial products:* API CF-4/SG or CF-4/SFThe use of commercial oils can require shortened oil change intervals as determined by close monitoring of oil condition with Scheduled Oil Sampling (S O S).
Failure to follow the oil recommendations can cause shortened engine life due to carbon deposits or excessive wear.
Consult the EMA Lubricating Oils Data Book, SEBU6310, for a listing of oil brands.Hydraulic Oil (HYDO)
Cat Hydraulic Oil should be used to achieve maximum life and performance from hydraulic system components and hydrostatic transmissions. Use of Cat Hydraulic Oil is recommended in most hydraulic and hydrostatic systems.* Cat Hydraulic Oil (HYDO)If different viscosities are required because of extreme ambient temperatures, the following oils can be used, use Caterpillar's:* Cat Engine Oil (EO)* Cat Diesel Engine Oil (DEO)Commercial Oils
If Cat Hydraulic Oil or Engine Oil is not available, use an engine-oil that meets one of these API service classifications; CF-4/SG, CF-4/SF, CE/SG, CE/SF, CD/SG, or CD/SF. Military specification, MIL-L-2104E or D may also be used.Industrial premium hydraulic oils that have passed the Vickers vane pump test (35VQ25) and/or have a minimum of 0.09% zinc additive may also be used. These oils should have antiwear, antifoam, antirust and antioxidation additives for heavy duty use as stated by the oil supplier. ISO viscosity grade of 46 would normally be selected.Differential (STOU or MPTF)
Caterpillar gear oil will maximize life of Caterpillar equipment, use:Use STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) or MPTF (Multipurpose Power
