Information:
Improper lubrication can cause damage to machine components. To avoid damage, make sure that the proper amount of grease is applied to the swing drive. When the amount of grease in the compartment becomes too large, the agitation loss becomes large, thereby accelerating grease deterioration.Grease deterioration can cause damage to the pinion gear of the swing drive and swing internal gear. Not enough grease will result in poor gear lubrication.

Remove the inspection cover that is located near the boom base. Inspect the grease.
Illustration 2 g00688056
Remove bolts (1) and washers (2). Remove cover (3) and gasket (4) .
Illustration 3 g00115464
Inspect gasket (4). Replace the gasket if damage is evident.
Check the following:
Level of the grease
Contamination of the grease
Discoloration of the greaseThe grease should be evenly distributed on the floor of the pan. Add or remove grease, as needed. If the grease is contaminated or discolored with water, remove the grease and add new grease.
Install the inspection cover.Remove Grease
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Park the machine on a level surface. Stop the engine. Release the hydraulic system pressure.
Remove the swing drive in order to remove grease from the swing gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR8616, "Swing Drive - Remove" for the procedure to remove the swing drive.Note: Refer to the appropriate Contamination Control Guidelines in order to prevent contamination of the hydraulic system.

Remove plug (5) in order to allow the water to drain.
Remove all of the grease from the swing gear and bearing through the mounting flange of the swing drive. Place the grease in a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Illustration 5 g00101644
Raise the boom and turn the upper structure. Lower the bucket to the ground and release the hydraulic system pressure.
Repeat step 4 and 5 until all of the grease has been removed.
Install the swing drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR8616, "Swing Drive - Install" for the procedure to install the swing drive.
Inspect the O-ring seal (6). Replace the O-ring seal if damage is evident. Install plug (5) and add grease.Add Grease
Too little grease will result in poor lubrication of the swing gear. Too much grease will result in the deterioration of the grease that is caused by excessive movement of the grease. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity of the swing gear.
Remove the inspection cover and add grease to the swing gear.
