Information:
Table 1 lists the diagnostic trouble code for low intake manifold air pressure.
Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Code
CDL Code and Description Conditions which Generate the Code System Response
E1045(2) Low Intake Manifold Pressure This code indicates that the intake manifold air pressure has dropped below the programmed threshold. The code is logged.
Engine power is derated. Test Step 1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Download the "Product Summary Report" from the engine ECM) before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
Check for an E583 High Air Inlet #1 Differential Pressure that is active or logged. Results:
E1045 Active or Logged - Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inlet Air Is Restricted" for troubleshooting information.STOP
E583 Active or Logged - Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. Check the Air Filter for Restrictions
Visually inspect the air filter elements for plugging. Check that the air filter housing is in good repair. Ensure that any damage to the housing is not causing an air restriction at the air inlet.
Visually inspect the inlet piping between the air filter housing and the turbocharger. Check the piping for dents and damage that may cause restriction. Expected Result:The air filter is clean and the air inlet is not restricted. Results:
OK - The air filters are OK and the inlet is not restricted. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- A restricted filter element is found.Repair: Clean the filter elements or replace the filter elements. Repair any inlet restriction that is found. Verify that the problem has been resolved.STOPTest Step 3. Inspect the Air Piping and Connections

Rubber couplings for the air intake system piping (left side engine view)
Visually inspect the air intake system piping from the turbocharger compressor outlet to the inlet of the air-to-air aftercooler core. Also, inspect the piping from the outlet of the air-to-air aftercooler to the intake of the engine. Check that the piping is in good repair and check that the piping is not leaking.
Remove the rubber couplings for the piping that are on each side of the engine. Inspect the couplings for air leaks. If necessary, replace the couplings. Expected Result:The piping and rubber couplings are in good repair. Results:
OK - The piping and rubber couplings are OK. Replace the couplings. Ensure that the clamps are tight. Verify that there are no leaks in the system. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK - A problem with the piping has been identified.Repair: Replace the damaged piping or hose connections. Verify that the problem has been resolved.STOPTest Step 4. Inspect the TurbochargerRemove the connection for the inlet air and the exhaust connection to the turbocharger. Verify that the compressor wheel and the turbine wheel are spinning freely. Verify that the compressor wheel and the turbine wheel are not damaged.Expected Result:The turbocharger is in good repair. Results:
Not OK - Repair: Replace the turbocharger. Return the engine to service.STOP
