Solution:
The following repair procedure should be used to rectify the bucket hinge problem.1. Remove the bucket from the machine using the directions in the appropriate Service Manual. Assemble the bucket in the fixture.2. Tie bar the lower bucket hinges together by tack welding.3. Pre-heat the boss to 232°C (450°F). Do this in a manner that allows uniform heat soaking through the thickness of the boss. Avoid hot spots. Maintain the temperature above 121°C (250°F) throughout the repair. To make sure that there is uniform heat penetration through the thickness of the boss, check on the opposite side of the heat application.4. Remove the weld in the cracks and adjacent to the cracks using an arc gouging process.5. Remove all the debris caused by the gouging and thoroughly clean the area by buffing.6. Determine the extent of the cracks. Use a good light source and magnifying glass for the purpose.Add a 6 mm (thickness) x 25 mm (width) (0.25 x 1.00 in) bar to the 4 lower hinges. This is done to prevent distortion of the hinges when welding.7. Prepare a 16 mm (.63 in) deep x 30° weld joint over the cracked plate by gouging.8. Repeat the weld joint for the opposite side of the plate if the crack is throughout the thickness of the plate.9. Clean the repair area thoroughly before the following welding process.10. Weld a 16 mm (.63 in) fillet using a low hydrogen process with a E 7018 electrode.11. Buff the weld repaired area as flush to the original part profile as possible.12. Allow the weld to cool down slowly, in still air if possible.13. Inspect the weld using a 110 volt dry magnetic particle test to find residual surface cracks. If this equipment is unavailable, use a Magnaflux TM dye penetrant. This is a three part chemical process that is applied with aerosol cans. The three chemicals needed for the process are:A. Cleaner Remover: SKF - NF/ZC-7BB. Penetrant: SKL - HF/SC. Developer: SKD - NF/ZP-9B14. If any cracks appear, repeat the pre-heat and weld sequence.15. Remove the tie bar. This bucket repair procedure is adaptable to 988F (8YG) Wheel Loaders. The repair procedure is also adaptable to 988B (50W, 62Y) Wheel Loader buckets, in case these buckets have been replaced with the 988F Wheel Loader buckets. Refer to Chart B for a list of the bucket groups and assemblies used in the 988F (8YG) Wheel Loaders.
