Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Hot engine oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot engine oil or components to contact the skin. Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.
1. Put a suitable container in position under oil filters and base assembly to contain the oil for storage or disposal. Using Tool (A), remove two filter assemblies (1) from the engine oil filter base. 2. Disconnect pressure sensor (2) from the wire harness at the electrical connection. Remove tube assembly (3) and the O-ring seals from the oil filter base. 3. Disconnect pressure sensor (4) from the wire harness at the electrical connection. 4. Remove tube (5) and the O-ring seals from the oil filter base assembly.
There is spring pressure behind the cover. Slowly and evenly remove the two bolts that hold the cover in position until the spring pressure has been released. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.
5. If necessary, remove the two bolts and the cover. Remove spring (6) and oil filter bypass valve (7). Repeat for remaining bypass valve (7). 6. Remove four bolts (8), and remove oil filter base assembly (9). The following steps are for the installation of the engine oil filters. filter base and bypass valve.7. Check all seals for wear or damage and replace if necessary. Lubricate all seals and valves with clean engine oil. Replace all gaskets prior to assembly. 8. Put oil filter base assembly (9) in position on the bracket, and install four bolts (8). 9. Put bypass valve (7) and spring (6) in position in the oil filter base assembly. Put the cover in position on the oil filter base assembly, and install the two bolts. Repeat for remaining bypass valve (7). 10. Put the O-ring seals in position on tube (5). Put tube (5) in position on the oil filter base assembly. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 47 9 N m (35 7 lb ft). 11. Connect pressure sensor (4) to the wire harness at the electrical connection. 12. Connect pressure sensor (2) to the wire harness at the electrical connection. Put the O-ring seals in position on tube (3). Install tube (3). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 47 9 N m (35 7 lb ft). 13. Put clean engine oil on the seal of filter (1). Put filter (1) in position on the oil filter base. Tighten the filter by hand until the seals make contact with the oil
