Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not turn the steering wheel when the engine is running and a low pressure gauge has been installed in the steering circuit. If the steering wheel is turned, the pressure of the oil to the steering cylinders will be too high for a low pressure gauge.

Move the machine to a level, hard surface. Shut off the engine and engage the parking brake.

Remove the dust cap from test port (1) of the steering pump. Connect Tooling (A) to test port (1) .

Remove the dust cap from test port (2) of the steering control valve. Connect Tooling (A) to test port (2) .

Start the engine and operate the engine at HIGH IDLE. Observe the pressure gauge readings. The difference between the two pressure gauges should be a maximum of 790 kPa (115 psi). If the pressure reading is within tolerance, continue to Step 5. If the pressure reading is out of tolerance, stop the machine and shut off the engine. Complete the following procedure.
Remove cover (4) from steering control valve (3) .
Add spacers (5) in order to increase the pressure. Remove spacers (5) in order to decrease the pressure. Refer to Specifications, "Steering Control Valve" for more information on the spacers.
Install cover (4) to steering control valve (3) .
Purge the steering system.
Repeat Step 4.
Remove all test equipment. Install dust caps on test ports (1) and (2) .
Purge the steering system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Steering System - Purge" for more information on purging the steering system.
